Hit card battler Marvel Snap is celebrating its second anniversary with over $275 million in lifetime revenue on mobile.
According to AppMagic estimates, gross earnings across Apple’s App Store and Google Play amounted to $276.5 million by October 18th, 2024, which marked two years since global launch.
When combined with alternate app store and PC revenue, the true total is likely higher.
The game has been a huge success for indie dev Second Dinner, finding major popularity with Marvel fans after scoring 30 million installs within three months of launch.
It’s also earned Second Dinner a place on our Top 50 Mobile Game Makers list.
With great power…
After generating roughly $600,000 in player spending during soft launch, Marvel Snap fully released on October 18th, 2022 and went on to earn $173 million in mobile player spending during its first year. In its second full year, it accumulated a further $102.9 million, marking a 40% decline year-over-year.
Its first year was evidently more successful, therefore, climbing in monthly revenue to a peak in December 2022 just shy of $20 million.
Since then, Marvel Snap has largely declined with the occasional outlier. Revenue spiked in March 2024 following the release of the Avengers vs. X-Men season pass.
The event and its associated $10 purchase (a standard for Marvel Snap’s monthly passes) leveraged two major Marvel universes and featured popular characters like Iron Man and Magneto.
March 2024 only marked a short turnaround, however, with revenue declining again in April. Snap’s fortunes have turned again since July, however, when a Deadpool-inspired battle pass released to coincide with the Deadpool & Wolverine movie. with the film’s launch on July 10th, Marvel Snap revenue soared by 300%.
Player spending has started creeping up since then, from $7.1 million in July to $7.5 million in August and $7.6 million in September. So far in October, the title has generated $5.7 million.
Great responsibility
Marvel Snap’s surges in revenue are heavily linked to new passes, bringing new characters on board and unlocking special “Variant” cards with unique aesthetics.
The game’s single most lucrative day on mobile was February 7th, 2023, following the release of steampunk Ant-Man and Wasp cards alongside Modok.
Similar to the Deadpool event, their release coincided with a Marvel movie premiere, namely Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which took place on February 6th, 2023. This was 11 days before the movie was released in cinemas in the US.
The pack helped to spike Marvel Snap’s revenue up to $1.2 million on February 6th. It made a further $1.3 million on February 7th, up from $353,000 on February 5th.
Now, Marvel Snap is celebrating its latest trip around the sun with a limited-time game mode called High Voltage and new cards inspired by Venom – yet another character with a film around the corner.
