An update on Bethesda’s support site has suggested that physical copies of Redfall may not include a game disc, instead containing “Xbox Play Anywhere codes” for use on Xbox Series X|S and/or PC.
Redfall is set to launch for Xbox Series X|S and PC on May 2nd, and is one of many games coming to Game Pass over the next few months. But since some people prefer to buy and own their games with physical copies, news that retail copies of Arkane’s game may not even include a disc is likely to have some folks seeing red.
Bethesda support site seems to suggest no discs for Redfall physical editions
The Bethesda support site was recently updated to include a question specifically about this concerning topic. “What codes do the physical versions of Redfall come with?” it poses, with the wording of the answer being the worrying part. “The code contained in the physical PC copies of Redfall are Steam codes. The physical Xbox copies of Redfall are Xbox Play Anywhere codes which can played on both the Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Xbox App on PC.”
There’s no reason to believe that Microsoft would be including both a code and a disc, as if they were giving two copies per purchase, you’d have expected that to have been a key talking point by now. Instead, with the wording around the Xbox version being practically the same as the PC edition, it sounds like retail boxes will only include a download code for Arkane’s vampire-hunting shooter. It’s not an entirely new thing — we saw it last year with Just Dance 2023 — but it’s not a good look for a big first-party game if this does turn out to be accurate, even if the game is confirmed to be online-only.
