The Nintendo 3DS – The Future of Handheld Gaming

The Nintendo 3DS is expected to be the first handheld gaming device to have full 3D graphics without the need for 3D glasses. The console will not only offer new 3D games but also offer classic Nintendo DS games in 3D, plus the ability to download and watch 3D films. The 3DS will still use the classic Nintendo DS layout but with a slightly larger 3.53 inch top screen which displays the 3D graphics. The bottom screen maintains the touch screen capabilities of its predecessor – the Nintendo DS. Previous features such as WiFi capability, microphone and inbuilt cameras all remain, allowing gamers to play against each other across local networks.

One of the new features of the 3DS will be that the user will be able to capture 3D videos and photos – a first for any gaming console. As well as recording and playing in 3D, you will be able to watch many great blockbuster films in 3D by downloading them direct to your console. Another new addition to the Nintendo 3DS is motion control. Inbuilt into the console is a motion sensor and gyro sensor which work together with the all new analog “slide pad” to allow you to have 360 degree control. Fans of the classic DS games and console don’t need to panic as the 3DS will feature a slider that can vary or completely remove the 3D graphics when required. Perfect if you want to play classic games such as Mario Kart or Pilot Wings Resort in the original 2D format. In addition to this the 3DS is backwards compatible and therefore all previous DS games will be playable on the console.

Some of Nintendo games planned on the 3DS which were demonstrated at the E3 conference are:

  • Nintendogs – which brings your virtual pets into 3D.
  • Steel Driver – a new submarine navigation game.
  • Animal Crossing – a new update of the popular community building game.
  • Dead or Alive 3D – 3DS version of the fast-paced fighting series from Tecmo Koei Games.
  • Resident Evil 3D – 3DS version of the classic ‘survival horror’ film from Capcom.
  • DJ Hero 3D – first release on the DS platform, bringing turntablism into 3D
